What to Wear (and Expect) for Your First Spray Tan

So, you love the idea of being a bronzed goddes, but the thought of stripping down in front of a stranger makes you want to run for the hills? You’re not alone. For many women, this is the number one fear before booking a spray tan. And even for the most seasoned glow-getters, walking into a new studio can feel a little intimidating.

The good news is, it doesn’t have to be. Loose, comfortable clothing is always best. Most women arrive in what they plan to leave in: baggy t-shirts, flowy pants, dresses, or skirts, preferably in darker colours. If you’re coming straight from work, just bring those clothes along to change into after your tan. You can absolutely wear a bra to your appointment, but most clients skip it afterwards to avoid strap lines.

Jewellery and accessories don’t mix well with spray tans. Necklaces, bangles, and watches can leave visible lines. Small stud earrings are fine, but it’s best to keep things minimal. Closed shoes and socks are another no-go, they’ll ruin your tan before it’s even had a chance to settle. Slip into sandals or slides for your appointment, you’ll thank yourself later.

Your spray tan artist will always start with a quick chat: why you’re tanning, what look you want, and what your expectations are. You’ll then be offered a disposable g-string. Let’s be honest: these little paper numbers don’t leave much to the imagination, but that’s the point, they keep lines minimal. If you’d rather wear your own underwear or g-string, that’s perfectly fine too.

As for going topless? That’s completely your choice. Many women go nude (especially if they’re prepping for strapless outfits), while others prefer to keep their bra on with the straps tucked away. It’s about what makes you feel comfortable. Once your tan is applied, you’ll slip back into those loose clothes and sandals, ready to float out the door with a brand-new glow.

Going nude—or partly nude—is part of the tanning process, but let me be clear: my role as your spray tan artist isn’t to judge. It’s to make you feel comfortable, cared for, and absolutely radiant. My only focus is creating the most flawless, glowing tan possible, so you walk out feeling like the best version of yourself.
